ABS – Siebel abounds with acronyms – some of them cool and unique to Siebel (RSTT), some of them used for other, very well known things in the real world (ABS) and some of them just hopelessly daft (OBLE, anyone?) or amusing (OE, which I remember from my Combined Cadet Force days actually used to mean “Other End” as in “Go to the OE and climb over that wall!”).
The Appointment Booking System or ABS has been a focus this week, in the context of some Siebel Service consulting. It is a very powerful engine for assigning appointments (Activities) to Engineers based on their availability, cost, time, and lots more. It often gets used in conjunction with the Optimizer which can (no surprises) optimize Engineers diaries to meet company and contractual goals of cost and time, as well as availability of spare parts and so on. It is useful to think of it as two separate visions of your diary – the ABS puts appointments in there, usually for the coming month or more, and the Optimizer makes sure the upcoming stuff (say the next week) is really well organized.
It gets its own truckload of vocabulary (glued period, horizon, greedy searches) and is very very smart. Siebel consultants would do well to learn about it for two reasons. One, it is a very clever engine that adds a whole new level to assignment management, and two, because it is a really fun way to learn about the business preoccupations of companies that do lots of repairs and visits to customers.
So we have loaded up the eLearning with a new course all about ABS. We expect to have 6 or maybe seven lessons by the time it is finished. It uses our new eLearning platform LearnDash LMS and Tin Can API with Articulate Storyline, and is the subject of a lot of discussion internally here at ODE. Have fun and enjoy!
